Obviously this is the "something else" that Bob alluded to a few weeks ago.

I think that's pretty neat. I still have the first couple Elfquest reprint softcovers, but I'll of course go for the HC Archives. According to Wendy Pini, they're going to get a recoloring and relettering job, so it ought to be interesting to see those results. I remember getting the softcovers at the mall bookstore when I was 13. Elfquest was pretty cool back then, and I'll probably pass my softcovers on to my niece and see if she likes them as much as I did.

DC's Archives initiatives is spreading far and wide- between the core Archives line, Eisner's Spirit, THUNDER Agents and MAD Archives, and now Elfquest, they're covering alot of bases! Good for them....I wish them well.

Recolored? Relettered? Not exactly an "Archive", is it? Still, it'll be interesting to see.

Didn't we hear a rumor of this a few months ago? This didn't surprise me, so I know I had to have heard something. I refuse to believe that I'm psychic!

Now the question is, will these volumes be priced like the Archives? I'm pretty sure they won't get the Archive Trade Dress, so is calling it an Archive just shorthand for Really Nice Hardcover, or are they going the whole long route?

I was just poking around the Elfquest website and found this editorial by Wendy Pini. She's been thinking about recoloring this stuff for over a year! She talks about making some changes here and there, to create the "definitive" Elfquest. I wonder if "relettering" really means "touching up dialog and captions to make them sound better"?

All I can say is...

THANK GOD!

I have the original softcover trades and have long been hoping that someone would come along and redo them in an archives type format.

Having them recolored and relettered is just gravy!

My only hope is that DC doesn't wait so long between publishing these editions.

Me? I can't wait to buy them already!

I'm very interested in this; I think I did a thread a while back called "Archives from Other Publishers" where we discussed the merits of an Elfquest Archive.

I don't know about the format on this; I hope they use the same EXACT paper as the Spirit series. I think that the glossy paper on the Donning reprints obscured Pini's good linework--it looked strangely translucent. But,in that edition, the watercolor-like coloring job sort of melded with that nicely.

Later, when it was republished and recolored, the linework was darker but this time the color was very bold and unsubtle. I've never been entirely satisfied with either color reprinting, so I'm looking forward very much to this 3rd go-round. This for Wendy Pini: Spirit Archives paper, black ink work showing well, and subtle color, showing lots of half-tones and shadings...perfect Elfquest.

I also hope that this time the series is printed in regular comic-size, as opposed to the magazine size of the original. Why? I just think it looked better that way, as evidenced when it was reprinted by Marvel. Just a personal preference. Anyway, the Mad Archives were oversized, and look endlessly odd to me...

Can anyone tackle an ElfQuest map? I've always heard great things about this series -- never tried it. Will be happy to give the Archive series an enthusiastic read.

After reading through the Newarama interview -- the thought occurred to me that a similar Archive treatment of Dave Sim's Cerebus could be possible. Of course, I wouldn't expect that to happen until this time next year after his 300th (and final) consecutive monthly issue is out, Dave has proved his point about self-publishing, and he is ready to turn his attention to something new. I recall over the years that he has said he has talked to DC about future projects....

I'd like to see a Cerebus Archive, too. I have all of the 'phone book' reprint volumes, but I'd rather see them between hard covers and printed on good paper. However, I'd be very surprised to see Cerebus published by anyone other than Dave Sim himself.

I doubt Dave Sim is interested in moving onto anything else. He's been putting out a monthly book without a break for over 25 years. I think he's ready to retire.

I also doubt that DC would touch Cerebus w/a ten foot pole, especially the last 5-10 years worth of books.

Joe P. -- Good point about the controversial content in Cerebus. It is definitely NOT a PC read. So I bet DC would shy away from it.

However, it is a complex, beautifully- rendered, thought-provoking and idiosynchratic one-of-a-kind work that is worthy of a better kind of permanent distribution than the cheap newsprint phonebooks that are now the only option.

I don't like the flimsy paper either, but it does have it fans due to the fact that the art actually reproduces well. Back in the 80's when all the baxter books were coming out, Sim said (this is from memory) that he was happy with the paper and liked the way it reproduced the blacks and the linework. More recently Eddie Campbell raved about the paperstock (which is very close to the same stock that he used for his From Hell collection and his comic) and complained about thicker/glossier paper hiding his fine lines and tones.

I think the Spirit & Mad Archives finally have the right paper stock. Of course I have no idea how much this paper cost compared to other options.

What I'd really like is a big hardcover coffe-table art book of all the Cerebus covers. Sim has a great eye for cover design and the readers of the phone books are missing one of the best parts on Cerebus. Of course, the same time Dave Sim was saying the he didn't need the thicker paper he said the hardcover cover collection sounding like a bad idea.

One last thought, based on pages and not story length, Cerebus would probably be a 30 volume archive series (this isn't included the appendices). I doubt there would be enough people willing to spend the $1500. Not that I wouldn't want to see it happen. Maybe since it's B&W and wouldn't need any reconstruction it'd have a lower price.

Frankly, Dave lost me after Jaka's Story, but the first several phone books were prime comics storytelling. High Society and the two Church and State volumes especially would be nice to have in a more permanent format.
Of course, any archival reprinting of Cerebus has to also include Dave's editorials and the letter columns as well as the covers--the Cerebus experience isn't complete without them.

The guy that offers the binding service also sells custom Cerebus HCs. They're not on better paper or anything. They're just copies of the tpb's with hardcovers added, I think. He's revamping his site, so the page with all the info on the Cerebus books is currently unavailable as far as I can see. I don't own these, so I can't tell you any more about them.
